A sound bath exhibition

Emergence seeks to present sound baths as works of improvised, abstract sound art performances that can be enjoyed as entertainment or used for meditative purposes. 8 unreleased recordings from the Sound Bath Sessions project will be exhibited online, and live events will be organized during the exhibition.
Virtual Exhibition
The 8 works featured in the virtual exhibit are selected from a collection of more than 100 sound bath recordings with 40 sound bath practitioners made in Hong Kong over the past year (2023/24). They feature a small slice of the many unique styles recorded for the project so far. The live, informal recordings are in locations that are meaningful to each practitioner and include the native ambiance that give context and identity.
The virtual exhibition format affords each listener the intimacy and isolation needed to experience the sound baths in their own time and place.

Hong Kong- Sound recordist Terence LLoren has curated Emergence, a virtual audio exhibition featuring 8 sound baths from his project, Sound Bath Sessions. The sound baths are selected from a collection of more than 100 recordings with 40 sound bath practitioners made over the past year (2023/24) in Hong Kong. Created to build and strengthen the local sound bath community, the project documents local practitioners' improvised sessions using instruments such as the gong, metal and crystal singing bowls, tuning forks, and shamanic drums. By presenting sound baths in this context, LLoren hopes that they can be appreciated not only as a benefit for personal wellness, but also for the wonderfully immersive and improvised performances that they are.The live recordings capture a 30-minute sound bath in a meaningful location chosen by the practitioner. The native sounds of the location are preserved giving context and identity of place.
“I am proud to commemorate the completion of our first year with an exhibition featuring these 8 unreleased recordings.” LLoren says. “Sound baths have evolved my way of experiencing sound, inspiring me to explore how I listen and pushes the understanding of my own senses. Helping to build a community that supports mental health by making sound baths more accessible is very rewarding for me and my main motivation for continuing with the Sound Bath Sessions project.”

Exhibition Overview
Sound baths are commonly used for meditation or mental and physical healing and often carry the associated stereotypes of being too esoteric, commercial, and spiritual. By presenting sound baths as sound artworks, Emergence seeks to reset the perceptions listeners have about sound baths and make them more accessible for a wider audience to appreciate.
Sound baths are live performances that are best experienced in a subconscious state. This kind of 'passive listening' is what makes these improvised sound works unique. Practitioners play sounds using sound objects to lull listeners to a relaxed state, then inspire new experiences while they dream. Regular sound bath participation can lead to deeper mental exploration and more colorful experiences.
As sound artworks, the fact that most practitioners have no formal musical training and are basing their compositions on ancient and contemporary sound healing practices are what make these documents special. Recording the practitioners in a private setting allows them the freedom to explore new locations and techniques that may be unusual in their typical group sound bath sessions.
The Sound Bath Sessions format will be extended to other countries in Asia to also build local sound bath communities and to document the way different cultures interpret sound baths.Exhibition Organizers and Curators

Terence LLoren (b.1978)
Terence LLoren is a Filipino-American sound recordist based in Hong Kong. He previously lived in Shanghai, China for the past 17 years and worked in the video and film production industry providing sound services for corporate videos, commercials, TV shows, and award-winning documentaries. Over the past few years, he began moving away from commercial work and sought more meaningful projects that focus on social and environmental topics. He produces independent field recording sound projects under the name ‘Bivouac Recording’ and encourages the production and experience of non-visual artwork. His current interest is producing projects for the wellness industry. Sound Bath Sessions is the latest project in this new direction.

香港——专业录音师罗天瑞精心策划了一场虚拟声频浴展览 “Emergence”，展示他的项目 “声频浴会”中的 8 首声频浴作品。这些声频浴作品是从过去一年（2023/24 年）在香港与 40 位声频浴师创作的 100 多首声频浴作品中精选出来的。该项目旨在建立和加强本地声浴社区，记录本地声频浴师使用铜锣、颂钵和水晶钵、音叉和萨满鼓等乐器进行的即兴演奏。通过在此背景下声频浴的展示，罗天瑞希望声频浴被更多人欣赏——不仅有益个人健康，更能成为一场美妙、身临其境的即兴表演。
声频浴师会选择一个具有意义的地点进行 30 分钟的声频浴；现场录音完整地记录这个过程。录音不仅原汁原味地保留了该地点的声音，并保留了其背景和特征所独有的氛围。
“我很自豪能展出这8首未发布的录音，庆祝我们第一年的工作圆满结束。”罗天瑞说道。“声频浴改变了我对声音的体验方式，启发我如何探索聆听，并推动我对自身感官的理解。通过让更多人接触到声频浴来帮助建立一个支持心理健康的社区，实在是我的荣幸，也是我继续开展‘声频浴会’项目的主要动力。”

“声频浴会 ”项目旨在通过展示本地录制的声频浴作品，在香港建立声浴社区。该项目收集了来自 40 位本地声频浴师录制的 100 多首声频浴作品，每周发布一首新的声浴。亚洲其他国家也将采用相同的项目形式进行推广，以建立当地的声浴社区，并记录不同文化对声频浴的不同诠释方式。

本次展览由“声频浴会 ”组织，由罗天瑞策划。
罗天瑞（1978 年出生）
罗天瑞是一位驻香港的菲律宾裔美藉声音记录师。他之前在中国上海生活工作了17年，从业于视频和电影行业，为企业宣传片、商业广告、电视节目和获奖纪录片提供声音服务。过去几年，他开始远离商业工作，寻找更有意义的项目，重点关注社会和环境话题。他以‘Bivouac Recording’的名义制作独立现场录音项目，并鼓励制作和体验非视觉艺术作品。他目前对为健康产业制作项目尤为感兴趣。“声频浴会 ” 是这一新方向的最新项目。
